More about phonics - Dipthongs and Triphthongs

Phonics is one of the most commonly adopted and applied reading methodology. There are several primary concepts encompassed, such as consonant blends and diphthongs.

This blog focuses on introduction of diphthongs and some basic application. There is also a short list of diphthong flash cards created, downloadable for you to share with your little ones.

What is Diphthong?

Diphthongs contains one or more vowels, and quite unlike digraph rules, the pairs of vowels pronunciations are read in blends, such as "ay" in "day" and "oi" in "soil". If the later example, the word could have been pronounced as "soul" if applying a digraph rule instead.
Further to Diphthong, a three letter blend could be mentioned as triphthong, which follows a similar rule to Diphthong, except it is a combination of 3 vowels. The combination of letters forms a complex sound as in -eau in "beau", or -ire in "fire", whereby the words are pronounced in blends.

Enclosed sample of what the flashcards looks like. There are also sample words provided to help identify where each phonics can be applied.
