More about phonics - Consonants and Vowels

I realized one of the higher hit posting is the phonics post, and I will be revising some of the phonics materials I have gathered and share in more details and uploading more templates with revised instructions as I sort out these materials to cover with my kids as well.

There are several modules or clusters within the entire phonics, they are the Consonants, Vowels, Digraph, Dipthongs.

I will first cover Consonants and Vowels in this posting.

Consonants are alphabet sounds in a letter, however, it does not include the alphabets that are part of the vowels. Thus, there are 21 consonants letters.
There are some guidelines how different combination of consonants will affect the way the alphabets will be pronounced, which will be covered further in Consonants blends, Digraph and Dipthong posts.

Vowels are alphabets a, e, i, o, u, and vowels are found in most of the words. There are some guidelines relating to how the vowels letters should be pronounced.

  • In situations that only one vowel exists in a word that ends with a consonant, the vowel will be pronounced briefly, such as Bed, Net, Cat, Match.
  • In the context when there are two vowels separately in a word, and the word ends with a vowel "e", the vowel in the earlier part of the word will be read longer. Such as make, date, site.
  • When two vowels exists close together, that is in pairs, the first vowel takes the lead, and the following vowel is silenced. Some examples are, clean (Where "a" is silenced), eight (Again "i" is silenced).
I have enclosed the first part of the Consonant and Vowel flash card templates, you are most welcome to download and follow the instructions.

For further suggestions how this may be improved, feel free to drop a comment or chat.
