Art Garden at SAM

During the last Wednesday of the June holidays, Joel and I visited the Art Garden at Singapore Art Museum together with an old friend and her kids.  We were pleasantly surprised that there could be so much to participate, and both the adults and the kids had a great time!

To many people, a museum is most likely an just an exhibition filled with many artworks.  However, we were amazed that  Art Garden is more than just an opportunity for artists to showcase their pieces. In fact, many of the art works that are showcased are lively and  even interactive!  Surpised?  Here's more.

Art Garden: Children at clay work
The Art Garden showcases artworks that are suitable for both  children and adults, and there are about 4 levels of exhibits. What's more, almost every level are filled with art activities that children can participate free with materials provided. There are clay works, coloring, and even origami (With instructions provided) . One of the most interesting activity is the clay works, children are given a piece of clay that is already moulded into a flower shape. There are sample templates and materials  available at the craft table that kids can reference to create any art patterns they want using simple items such as paper clips, clothes pegs, and keys. You'd be surprise how creative children can be. The final output are then fitted with a magnet and you can bring the finished artwork home as a fridge magnet.

Another interesting exhibit and handson would probably be the origami, where children sat around the work table and are guided how to fold the paper into either leaves, birds or flowers. The little artists can opt to either keep the final artwork, or contribute their artwork to the showcase, which is where the highlight of this segment resides. The art room for the origami is a dark room, located just beside the origami activities. One could feel tranqulity once you enter this darkroom, as though you have been transported into a dark peaceful garden filled with singing birds. The origami artworks are all beautifully hung on strings, glowing everywhere like a night garden. This is one exhibit that we  enjoyed the most.

Apart from above mentioned, there are many other interactive exhibits that the children will appreciate and participate. Visitors can create videos of themselves dancing to music in a room. There is even an octupus exhibit that changes colors as it senses visitors nearing, and the colors gets increasingly vibrant as more people approaches.  Enclosed a video to delight your senses.

For anyone that's interested to visit, The Art Garden is located just opposite the Art Museum, across a little road at 8 Queens Street, but not within the SAM main building. I have enclosed the website for anyone whom may want to know more.
