Supplementary review: The New First Aid In English
Remember the old school days when we used to walk around carrying and mugging the English Bible? This old academic treasure had long been forgotten and the knowledge tossed into the air upon graduation.
It was only recently that I came across a revised publication of this Bible that I was reminded of this valuable gem and immediately grabbed a copy of it - The New First Aid In English, by Angus Maciver.
This book is almost like a mini English encyclopedia , as it covers all the elements required to lay a good foundation. The content covers a good range from grammar modules such as nouns, pronouns, adjectives to a good list of genders, occupations, places, synonyms and Proverbs.
Ufortunately, not all the modules provide a good listing. For example, Places and Receptacles only provided a list of question and we are expected to research for the answers. Nevertheless this would serve as a comprehensive guide, and I will incorporate flash cards in my son's revision following the guide. The exercises will also serve as good practices opportunities.
One very good improvement observed is that this new revision has a much better print size, quite unlike the old almost pocket size version, and one no longer needs to squint to follow the small prints.
Great supplement!
